World’s greatest homemade protein bars? |

In order to create a protein bar I used a protein powder, a few nuts, a chocolate protein bar wrappers, a protein powder, melted chocolate to add some sweetness, and then I added a few fruits or veggies – I added blueberries, strawberries, mango, and a banana. Protein bars are a diet staple for many people, but their creation can sometimes be a bit of a hassle for the home baker. We’ve found the best bars are the ones that are easy to make, taste great, and are packed with healthy ingredients. The best part about making your own bars is that you are in control of the ingredients, rather than the product being made for you.

I went over to Phil’s house for a visit a few weeks ago. I was hungry, so I opened his fridge to look for something to eat. I gasped in surprise when I saw a bake pan holding some type of cake-like treat, expecting to discover regular PN cuisine — lean meat, a ton of fruits and veggies, etc.

“What is this nonsense?” With all the subtlety of a seasoned dietary task-master, I inquired.

“Crap? Those are the fruits of my labor. Give them a chance. Made with mixed nuts and whole oats, this snack is high in protein. You’ll enjoy them.”

I was hungry, as I already stated. So I sliced a little square and sunk my teeth into it. I was on the verge of promoting Phil to Supreme Dictator of after only one taste. That’s how fantastic the Caravaggio Bar was.

The Caravaggio Bar is a bar in the style of Caravaggio.

So, after persuading Phil to reveal his secret bar formula to me, I’ve chosen to share it with you, my friends.

Here’s how to make your own Caravaggio Bars at home…

Ingredients:

3 cups trail mix with cranberries 3 c. nut mixture 1 cup oats, big flake 10 scoops (20 grams of protein each scoop) protein powder with vanilla flavor 2 tablespoons molasses 2 tablespoons honey

Instructions:

In a food processor, chop the cranberry mixture and mixed nuts. In a large mixing bowl, combine large flake oats and protein powder (as big as you can find, otherwise you may have to do this in two batches).

To avoid a chalky consistency, add just enough water to wet all of the protein powder. Add 1 tbsp molasses next, spreading it evenly throughout the batter and completely mixing it together. Then add 1 tbsp honey and repeat the process. Add another spoonful of each sweetener and repeat the process. If the mixture is too dry, add some water; if it is too moist, add some protein.

Cover the bottom of two 9 × 9 baking dishes with plastic wrap, leaving enough wrap on each side to wrap around the mixture and cover the top. Spoon the mixture over the wrap in the baking dishes and pack it in with a spoon. Cover the mixture with the remaining wrap and flatten it with your hands. Refrigerate. There’s no need to bake.

Cut the dough into 20 bars, ten for each baking dish. And take pleasure in it.

Notes:

If you don’t keep the mixture covered in the fridge, it will dry out.

These bars are delicious, but don’t eat too many of them. Despite the nutritious ingredients, 2 or 3 tiny squares have 600-900 calories. That’s a lot of money for a small bite.
